This handmade blue cashmere and fine wool scarf for men is part of our “charkha” collection.
This handmade blue cashmere and fine wool scarf for men is part of our “charkha collection”, which is Hindi for spinning wheel. It is extremely soft, warm and comfortable to wear. The plain monochrome weave of this scarf creates an elegant look.
Our “charkha collection” is associated with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian Independence. Gandhi believed that the wish for social cohesion and freedom can be sparked by the sound of the spinning wheel. With his teachings, the charkha became a symbol of non-violence, independence, and a tool that could lift the people out of poverty.
Our handmade collection comes from the conflict areas of Jammu and Kashmir. We believe that Gandhi’s philosophy holds true even today. Hand spun local craft and the possibility to sell it in the international market can help uplift the condition of weavers.
The midnight blue colour of our scarf is inspired by the Indian city of Jodhpur – popularly known as the ‘blue city’. In Jodhpur, a wide ocean of blue houses stretches for several kilometres along the walls of the historic old town. A blue colour on a house used to indicate that a Brahmin (a priest) was living there. However, over time more and more non-Brahmins also applied the cooling blue colour on their houses. As a result, with time, most of old town was painted in shades of blue.
